I've spent more than 20 years teaching English, including many years teaching students throughout Asia as well as teaching online. During that time, I've watched English education change dramatically. I've taught in traditional classrooms, universities, language schools, private lessons, and online environments.

The key is having the right teacher, consistent practice, and lessons designed around the individual student. Here are seven things I've found to be true throughout my teaching career.
In a traditional classroom, one teacher may be responsible for 20, 30, or even more students. That means each student receives only a small portion of the teacher's attention.
I've taught large classes myself, and this is simply one of the realities of classroom teaching. No matter how dedicated the teacher is, there are only so many minutes in a class.
One-on-one online lessons are different.
The teacher can focus entirely on one student's English level, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. If the student struggles with pronunciation, the teacher can spend more time correcting pronunciation. If speaking is the priority, the lesson can include more conversation practice.
The lesson belongs to the student.
Finding a good English teacher locally isn't always easy.
A student might find an excellent teacher nearby — but location shouldn't determine who teaches you or your child.
This is one of the biggest advantages I've seen with online education. Students are no longer limited by geography.
Online learning dramatically expands the choices.
Students can look for teachers based on their experience, teaching style, qualifications, personality, availability, and areas of expertise rather than simply choosing someone because they happen to live nearby.
In my experience, finding the right teacher-student match can make an enormous difference in long-term learning.
You cannot learn to speak English confidently without speaking English.
I've seen this throughout my career. A student can study grammar for years, memorize vocabulary, and perform well on written exercises while still being uncomfortable having a real conversation in English.
In large classes, students can spend much of the lesson listening to the teacher or waiting for other students.
During a one-on-one English lesson, there is nowhere for conversation to disappear.
Students can ask questions, answer questions, discuss topics, practice pronunciation, explain ideas, and receive immediate feedback.
That active participation is especially valuable for learners who understand English grammar and vocabulary but still have difficulty speaking naturally.
Not every English student needs the same lesson.
This is something that became very clear to me while teaching students of different ages, backgrounds, and English levels throughout Asia.
A child learning basic conversation has very different needs from a professional preparing for an international job interview. A student preparing for IELTS or TOEFL needs something different again.

Consistency is one of the most important parts of learning a language.

Traditional tutoring can involve traveling across town, arranging transportation for children, dealing with traffic, or coordinating several schedules.

Students can learn from home, the office, or another suitable location with an internet connection. Parents don't have to drive children across town for every lesson, and busy adults can fit lessons more easily around work and family responsibilities.
When learning is easier to schedule, it becomes easier to keep learning.
Many English learners are afraid of making mistakes.
I've worked with countless students who knew far more English than they initially believed they could speak. Often, the problem wasn't knowledge. It was confidence.
That fear can become even stronger when students have to speak in front of a classroom full of other people.
One-on-one online lessons provide a more personal environment where students can work directly with their teacher. They can make mistakes, ask questions, try again, and improve without worrying about an entire classroom listening.
I've always believed that a good teacher doesn't simply correct English.
A good teacher helps the student become comfortable using English.
That confidence eventually carries into real conversations outside the classroom.
Online learning is much more than a video call.
When I first began teaching, the technology available to teachers was completely different from what we have today. Modern online classrooms give teachers and students tools that simply weren't available in a traditional classroom twenty years ago.
Teachers and students can use lesson materials, documents, images, interactive activities, chat, notes, screen sharing, and other resources during a lesson.
This allows the teacher to combine conversation with visual and written learning in the same class.
For children especially, variety and interaction can help keep lessons interesting and engaging.
After more than 20 years of teaching English in Asia and online, my answer is absolutely — when students have the right teacher and actively participate in their lessons.
I've seen firsthand that the location of the teacher isn't what determines whether a student succeeds.
The more important questions are:
Is the student engaged?
Is the teacher a good match?
Is the student practicing English consistently?
When those pieces come together, online English lessons can be an extremely effective way to develop real-world English skills.
