S — Speak

The first step in the LinguaPro SMART Method is Speak.

Many English learners have a larger vocabulary than they realize. They recognize words when they read or hear them, but when it is time to have a conversation, those same words can be difficult to use.

That is why speaking begins immediately.

Rather than memorizing a long list and moving on, start by saying each word aloud. Listen to its pronunciation, notice its sounds, and then practice using it yourself.

Vocabulary Practice

Today, we will work with ten common English words. Each one contains the schwa /ə/, one of the most common sounds in spoken English.

Say each word several times. Concentrate on saying the word clearly and naturally.

Then try putting each word into your own sentence.

This is where vocabulary begins becoming speaking vocabulary instead of simply words you recognize.

M — Method

Now we take those same words and give them a Method.

Learning isolated vocabulary can only take you so far. To develop useful English speaking skills, you need to understand how those words fit naturally into sentences.

Sentence Practice

Read each sentence aloud.

Notice what has happened.

You started with:

about → problem → support → sofa

Now those words have become:

What is this about?
There’s a problem with the plan.
Can you support me?
I’ll sit on the sofa for a while.

Read each sentence slowly once. Then say it again at a natural speaking speed. Finally, try saying it without looking at the sentence.

The Method is taking shape:

A — Active

Now it is time to become Active.

This is where the lesson begins moving away from traditional exercises and toward actual communication.

You already know the vocabulary. You have practiced the sentences. Now those same words and sentence patterns become part of a conversation.

Conversation Practice

Practice this conversation with another person. Read it once, switch roles, and then try it again.

Now change the conversation.

Change the destination. Change the flight time. Add a problem. Talk about who is traveling with you. Replace some of the vocabulary with other words you know.

R — Real

The next step is Real.

Eventually, English has to leave the lesson.

You may need it when traveling, talking to a coworker, attending school, meeting a new person, interviewing for a job, solving a problem, or simply having a conversation.

A good English speaking course should prepare you for those moments.

Expand Your Vocabulary

Do not stop with the definition of a word. Put it into a sentence, ask a question with it, answer that question, and use the word in conversation.

That is how vocabulary becomes usable English.

Keep It Simple

Good communication does not require complicated English.

If you can express your idea clearly with a simple sentence, say it. As your English improves, you can gradually make your sentences longer and more detailed.

Pronunciation is about being understood.

Now speak about it for one minute.
