IELTS reading strategy practice
Practice IELTS reading strategies including skimming, scanning, evidence checking, and managing difficult questions.
Learning objectives and audience
This lesson is for learners preparing for IELTS reading who want to improve accuracy and speed without guessing blindly. You will practice skimming, scanning, and checking answers against the text.
What reading strategy means
A reading strategy is a decision about where to look and what to ignore. Many learners read every word from the beginning, which leaves too little time for difficult questions. Instead, first skim the passage to understand its structure: headings, first sentences, and paragraph topics. Then scan for the specific information a question asks for.
Always return to the text to justify an answer. If you cannot point to words or ideas that support your choice, reconsider it.
Practical reading techniques
1. Read the question before the full passage and identify key words.
2. Skim for overall structure rather than detail.
3. Scan for names, numbers, dates, and unusual words.
4. Compare your answer with the exact wording of the question.
5. Check whether a “true/false/not given” answer is supported, contradicted, or absent from the text.
Avoid changing an answer only because it sounds plausible. The correct answer must be supported by the passage.
Common mistakes and corrections
A common mistake is spending too long on one question. Correction: mark it, move on, and return if time remains. Another mistake is confusing “not given” with “false.” Correction: “false” means the text says the opposite; “not given” means the text does not say enough. A third mistake is paraphrasing too freely. Correction: keep your answer close to the passage’s meaning, not your own opinion.
Guided practice activity
Use a short article and five questions. For each question, write the line or phrase that supports your answer. If you cannot find support, mark the question as uncertain and move on. After finishing, review only the uncertain questions and decide whether the text gives enough information.
