IELTS speaking practice with a teacher
Practice IELTS speaking by developing clear answers, reviewing official criteria, and planning preparation responsibly.
Learning objectives and audience
This lesson is for learners preparing for IELTS speaking and for teachers who want structured speaking practice. You will develop clear answers, review speaking skills, and plan preparation responsibly without relying on memorized scripts or score promises.
How to build an answer you can explain
Speaking practice is more useful when you develop an idea rather than memorize a paragraph. Start with a familiar prompt such as “Describe a place where you enjoy spending time.” Identify the place, explain why it matters, and add a specific detail. A simple experience explained clearly gives you material to discuss further.
For example: “I enjoy a small park near my home. It is quieter than the main road, and I often walk there after work. Last week I noticed a new community garden.” The details create natural follow-up questions about routines, public spaces, and changes in the neighborhood.
Review several speaking skills
The official IELTS speaking assessment criteria cover fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. In a practice lesson, choose a specific observation within these areas. Can the listener follow the order of your ideas? Are you using a word accurately? Can you repair a sentence when its meaning is unclear?
A teacher’s practice feedback is not an official result. Ask for examples from your own answer and a manageable next step instead of relying on a promised band score.
Repeat with a meaningful change
After feedback, answer the prompt again with a different supporting detail. This lets you practice an improvement without simply reciting the first version. Then try a related question that asks you to compare or explain: “Why do some people prefer outdoor spaces?”
If you forget a word, paraphrase the idea. “A place where neighbors grow vegetables” can communicate your meaning when “community garden” is not available to you.
Common mistakes and corrections
A common mistake is memorizing a complete answer. Correction: learn flexible phrases and practice adapting them to different prompts. Another mistake is speaking too quickly to sound fluent. Correction: use pauses to organize ideas; clarity matters more than speed. A third mistake is ignoring pronunciation. Correction: ask for feedback on word stress and sentence rhythm, not only grammar.
Guided practice activity
1. Choose one prompt and speak for 45 seconds without notes.
2. Listen to a recording of your answer and identify one strength and one improvement.
3. Repeat the answer with one added detail and one repaired sentence.
4. Ask a teacher to comment on one criterion only.
