IELTS writing feedback lessons
Improve IELTS writing through focused feedback, targeted revision, and a repeatable feedback-and-revision cycle.
Learning objectives and audience
This lesson is for learners who want to improve IELTS writing through feedback rather than through repeated practice alone. You will learn how to use feedback, revise a draft, and focus on one or two improvement areas at a time.
What useful writing feedback looks like
Good feedback identifies a pattern and gives you a way to act on it. “Your grammar needs work” is less useful than “You often write long sentences without punctuation; try splitting them into two sentences.” Useful feedback also separates task achievement, coherence, vocabulary, and grammar so you know which area to address first.
When you receive feedback, do not rewrite everything immediately. First, read it and identify the two most frequent issues. Then revise one paragraph with those issues in mind. This keeps the task manageable and helps you notice whether the change actually improves the text.
A feedback-and-revision cycle
1. Write a timed draft without stopping to perfect every sentence.
2. Review it yourself for one issue, such as paragraphing or verb tense.
3. Receive teacher feedback on a different issue.
4. Revise only the sections affected by that issue.
5. Write a new short response and apply the same improvement.
This cycle prevents feedback from becoming a list of corrections that you never internalize.
Common writing mistakes and corrections
A common mistake is adding memorized phrases that do not fit the task. Correction: use phrases you understand and can adapt. Another mistake is writing an introduction that is too long. Correction: state the topic and your position or plan in two or three sentences. A third mistake is listing ideas without linking them. Correction: use clear paragraph breaks and simple linking words such as “However,” “For example,” and “As a result.”
Guided practice activity
Take a 150-word paragraph about a familiar topic. First, underline every sentence longer than 25 words. Then decide whether each long sentence should be split, shortened, or left as it is. Rewrite two of them. Finally, ask a teacher whether the revision is clearer.
