English exam vocabulary review

Review English exam vocabulary in small sets using definitions, collocations, original sentences, and spaced review.

Learning objectives and audience

This lesson is for learners preparing for English exams who want to review vocabulary efficiently. You will learn how to organize vocabulary by function, review it actively, and avoid memorizing words you cannot use.

Why vocabulary review needs strategy

Memorizing long word lists rarely improves exam performance. Words are useful when you know their meaning, collocation, and context. A better approach is to group words by function, such as describing change, expressing opinion, or reporting results.

Review should be active. Instead of rereading a list, test yourself, write original sentences, and use the words in short speaking or writing tasks. This shows whether you truly know the word.

A practical review method

1. Choose 10 to 15 words from one topic or exam practice set.

2. Write a definition in your own words.

3. Write one collocation for each word.

4. Write one original sentence.

5. Review after one day, then after one week.

If you cannot write an original sentence, the word is not yet ready for active use. Keep it in a “recognition only” list until you see it in more examples.

Common mistakes and corrections

A common mistake is reviewing too many words at once. Correction: use small sets and spaced review. Another mistake is learning words without collocations. Correction: record “make a decision,” not just “decision.” A third mistake is ignoring word form. Correction: note whether the word is a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb and practice related forms when useful.

Guided practice activity

Choose ten words from a recent practice test. For each one, complete three lines:

Word: ______

Collocation: ______

Original sentence: ______

Then cover the definitions and try to recall them. Mark words you missed and review only those the next day.
