TOEFL academic writing practice

Practice TOEFL academic writing with planning, supported claims, focused paragraphs, and concise revision.

Learning objectives and audience

This lesson is for learners preparing for TOEFL academic writing and for teachers who want structured writing practice. You will learn how to plan a response, support a claim with relevant examples, and revise for clarity.

Planning before writing

A short plan prevents a disorganized response. Before writing, identify the main claim, two supporting reasons, and one example for each reason. If you cannot explain your plan in one sentence, the response may be unclear.

For example, for a question about whether students should study in groups, a plan might be: “Group study improves understanding because peers explain concepts differently; it also builds communication skills; however, it can be distracting without a clear goal.” This plan gives you a structure and a balanced position.

Supporting your ideas

Academic writing requires relevant support, not only opinions. Use examples from study, work, or everyday life. If you do not have a real example, describe a realistic situation clearly and label it as hypothetical.

Keep paragraphs focused. One paragraph should develop one main idea. If you introduce a new idea, start a new paragraph. This makes the response easier to read and easier to score.

Common mistakes and corrections

A common mistake is writing a long introduction. Correction: state your position and plan in two or three sentences. Another mistake is using memorized templates that do not fit the prompt. Correction: learn flexible phrases for introducing, contrasting, and concluding. A third mistake is neglecting revision. Correction: leave two minutes to check subject-verb agreement, article use, and sentence boundaries.
