TOEFL speaking practice

Practice TOEFL speaking by organizing direct answers, supporting details, examples, and timed review.

Learning objectives and audience

This lesson is for learners preparing for TOEFL speaking and for teachers who want structured speaking practice. You will learn how to organize spoken responses, use supporting details, and review your performance against clear criteria.

Organizing a spoken response

A strong spoken response has a clear structure: a direct answer, one or two supporting points, and a specific example. Long introductions waste time and make the answer harder to follow.

For example, if asked to describe a useful daily habit, you might say: “I walk for twenty minutes after lunch. It helps me focus in the afternoon, and last week I noticed that I slept better on days when I walked.” The answer is direct, specific, and easy to expand.

Practice with timing and review

Practice short responses under realistic time limits, but focus first on clarity. A clear 45-second answer is more useful than a rushed 60-second answer. After speaking, review whether your main point was clear in the first sentence and whether your example actually supported it.

Record yourself when possible. Listening to your own answer can reveal habits such as repeating the same word, trailing off at the end, or speaking too quickly.

Common mistakes and corrections

A common mistake is memorizing a full response. Correction: prepare flexible language for common functions, such as describing, comparing, and explaining. Another mistake is using complex grammar at the expense of clarity. Correction: use structures you can control accurately. A third mistake is ignoring transitions. Correction: use simple signposting such as “The main reason is…” and “For example…”

Guided practice activity

1. Choose a prompt and speak for 45 seconds.

2. Transcribe the first two sentences and check whether they answer the question directly.

3. Add one specific example if it is missing.

4. Repeat the response and compare the two versions.
