TOEIC workplace vocabulary lessons

Build TOEIC workplace vocabulary through contextual phrases, collocations, and common business situations.

Learning objectives and audience

This lesson is for learners preparing for TOEIC or workplace English who want to build vocabulary for common business situations. You will practice vocabulary in context, notice collocations, and avoid memorizing isolated word lists.

Why workplace vocabulary needs context

Workplace vocabulary is not just a list of business words. It includes the phrases people use to request, confirm, delay, apologize, and report. “Please find attached,” “Could you confirm receipt?” and “We need to reschedule” are useful because they appear in real communication.

Learning words in context helps you remember their meaning and use. Instead of memorizing “invoice,” learn the phrase “issue an invoice” and the sentence “Please send the invoice to the accounts department.” This gives you grammar, collocation, and purpose at the same time.

Core workplace vocabulary areas

1. Scheduling: reschedule, postpone, confirm, cancel, availability.

2. Documents: invoice, receipt, contract, report, attachment.

3. Communication: clarify, follow up, notify, inform, update.

4. Problems: delay, error, shortage, complaint, resolve.

5. Results: increase, decrease, improve, reduce, achieve.

For each word, write a sentence that includes who, what, and why. This turns vocabulary into usable language.

Common mistakes and corrections

A common mistake is learning synonyms without checking usage. “Big” and “large” are similar, but “a large increase” sounds more natural than “a big increase” in a report. Another mistake is translating workplace phrases word by word. Correction: learn complete phrases such as “as soon as possible” and “for your reference.” A third mistake is ignoring tone. Correction: choose more formal phrases for external communication and simpler ones for internal chat.

Guided practice activity

Complete the workplace mini-dialogue.

A: “Could you ______ the meeting to Thursday?”

B: “Thursday works. I will ______ the updated agenda.”

A: “Please ______ the client before Friday.”

Model answers: reschedule; send; notify.

Now write three sentences about your own work or study using vocabulary from two different areas.
